My point in addressing these two weeds in this post is that we regularly underestimate that which is right under our feet simply by a lack of awareness. And we may be doing the same thing with the people that surround us. In an ideal world, we would each take the time to talk to the people around us and ask a few questions to find out what they like to do best. I have been amazed at the answers and the sheer diversity of talent revealed. So if you have a few moments, don't be afraid to ask the person next to you a question or two. It's good for your digestive system.
I recently read a great article here telling me about the virtues of the humble plantain, a weed you commonly find on lawns and driveways in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. According to the article on the Life Advancer website-- which also advertises broadleaf pesticides, something we advise against using and which is illegal in Maple Ridge according to our Pesticide Control Bylaw--plantain can draw toxins from wasp stings, mosquito bites and slivers on your outside. On your inside, the leaves and seeds can be made into infusions (teas) or chips (like kale chips) that assist your digestive system, especially after courses of antibiotics. The article makes quite a few more claims without citation, but I can personally attest to the effectiveness of plantain at taking away the pain of stinging nettle, which itself is an incredibly useful plant, albeit rather treacherous.
