Good Morning Gerry
My apologies for not being able to attend tonight's meeting. (Feel free to share this with your group)
Its interesting, looking at
When I see this, I am reminded about GETI's beginnings.
I came to learn about GETI in 2011 through attending community discussion groups held at the CEED Centre.
Not knowing much about fossil fuels at the time, I learned a little more each Wednesday when you shared information with the CEED group, or it became a topic of discussion with the group.
The GETI concept was growing, but still lacked a platform or source where others could participate, then, the GETI website was constructed and a platform for collective sharing was born.
GETI quickly moved from concept, communication, conversation, collaboration to collective production.
The new goal was to now move the digital to the grassroots dirt patch located in the middle of our city...and you did. An organic, old-fashioned festival was born...GETI Fest !
I always think of GETI Fest as a kind of "Sunday Best Outing." We comb our hair, put on nice clothes and come out of our digital safe havens to show our city we mean business.
Many have a business or a some type of investment that we are trying to get to fruition.
So supporting and sharing our business interests is a driving force embedded within the GETI social structure.
We now have a progressive, inclusive initiative that is helping people within our community expand socially and economically.
I am not engaged in a business that involves food security, water security, energy reduction, waste reduction, or improved transportation, and I may never.
I sign online petitions to stop pipelines, like most people I know, then promptly get into my gas-guzzling vehicle and drive off to the market for milk.
I engage in conversations regarding oil...they are extremely limited..."complaining when the prices of gas are up, celebrating when the prices of gas are down."
I am a work in progress...and its good to know that I am not alone.
I confess I am not a mover and a shaker in the sense that I want to drop driving my jeep and take up riding my bike.
Although, I often want to ride my bike, but get a little intimidated at the road designs in our fair City.
While I am driving my jeep, I try to map out safe routes to ride my bike.
Bike routes are limited here...which makes me sad, because its the one thing I could do for this whole fossil fuel reduction thing.
I would ride my bike to get that milk at the grocery store, but, feel a bit vulnerable out there with all those cars whooshing by...
Which made me think...wouldn't it be cool to have a "Bike Buddy" system/Group. (?)
Something to share with the GETI GROUP next time I see them.
GETI has been a "Good thing" in my life. I have made healthy social and business connections, and even friends by engaging in both a digital and grassroots/dirt manner.
I created an online account on the GETI website, and even had 2 of my own action groups. I found a friend who started the coolest thing, "skillsharing," and learned how to make wine!
There was room for me and my talents at GETI Fest for several years in a row.
I started to work what I learned...concept, communication, conversation, collaboration to collective production.
My interest and participation lead to many more invitations for others to participate.
Each year I participated in GETI Fest magical things happened.
I fronted a blues band, brought people together to create an environmental stage production for children in the form of live theatre, worked with writers, singers, educators, people in the business community, and had the entire yoga and metaphysical/spiritual community give 1/2 workshops, which ended in the most fabulous Thai massage demo you wish you were there for!
How does that fit into fossil fuel reduction?
Well, fossil fuel reduction is a goal. One day I will trade my jeep for a hybrid or an electric car. Until then, I will be happy just to join the conversation and learn about all the great ideas about a life with multiple energy options, and just doing those small tangible things I can do today to help my world, starting with growing a garden in my back yard, buying water barrels and collecting water off the roof of my house, drying my clothes on the clothes line whenever the sunshine permits, having my whole family get into the reduce, reuse, recycle mode, getting brave enough to ride that bike when our fridge needs milk.
Wait a minute?
I just covered all the bases...food security, water security, energy reduction, waste reduction, or improved transportation.
(don't forget that "Bike Buddy" idea...that falls under "improved transportation."
See its not so hard.
GETI is a group of people, who don't always have all the answers to the big problems our world faces. But we are striving for a healthier community and healthier world.
GETI is a place I feel comfortable giving what I can, in the forms that I can.
GETI has been a good thing in my life.
Cheers,
P.
