Artist: Galina Cooper Water, water, every where.... These famous words from the Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge teach us to treat nature properly or suffer the consequences. The unfortunate sailor that killed the albatross in the poem was accused of sealing the fate of his shipmates by his actions. The metaphor cuts all too closely for comfort to our present circumstances. If we allow our rivers, streams and watercourses to be degraded for economic gain as recent legislative changes permit, we risk our own health and happiness into the future. I am happy to say, however, that the Watershed Watch Salmon Society is working to bring awareness to us about these issues. And they have chosen Art as a means of reminding us just how important our water is. On March 22, 2014, Artist: Kristin Krimmel the organization will host a community gathering focusing on art--photos, paintings and poems--to inspire our appreciation of water in Maple Ridge and the surrounding communities. The event will be held on World Water Day at the River's Heritage Center at Allco Park in Maple Ridge, Saturday, March 22 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. It will feature outstanding paintings by local artists, such as Galina Cooper and Kristin Krimmel, that depict our local waterways. To delight your sense of sound, open-mic performances by local musicians will be complemented by poems and spoken word performances. And breath-taking photographs will make you want to grab your canoe paddles and take to the river. Join Watershed Watch and their local host, Alouette River Management Society, at the River's Heritage Center to celebrate water and all it encompasses for us today and tomorrow.
